WHAT IS THE RENEW WISCONSIN ENERGY FUND?

The Energy Fund is a not-for-profit, non-partisan organization created under section 501c4 of the IRS code. The Energy Fund's mission is to support the growth of Wisconsin’s economy and jobs by advocating for the development and deployment of renewable sources of energy, such as solar, wind, bioenergy, geothermal, and other clean and sustainable energy resources, for the benefit of the citizens of Wisconsin.

The Energy Fund will:

  • Educate and mobilize citizens and legislators to support renewable energy use in Wisconsin.

  • Work to remove legal and regulatory barriers that limit the use of renewable energy.

  • Support free markets and fair competition for affordable renewable energy production.

  • Remain non-partisan and focused on renewable energy issues, not party affiliation.

WHY DO WE NEED THE ENERGY FUND?

RENEW Wisconsin is a nonprofit 501c3 charity. RENEW has been in existence for over 30 years and has achieved many great successes.

As a charity, RENEW cannot engage in the political process outside of a limited amount of direct lobbying. The Energy Fund is a 501c4 nonprofit organization which can do things that RENEW can’t, such as:

• Conduct unlimited educational campaigns on legislative issues affecting renewable energy

• Engage in unlimited lobbying if needed

• Spend up to 40% of its funds for political efforts

• Publicly support pro-renewable energy legislative candidates

• Create a Political Action Committee to support pro-renewable energy legislative candidates

Many trade associations and not-for-profit groups form 501c4s in order to more effectively educate policymakers and citizens. Some spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on lobbying and politics to influence issues that affect their industry or interests.

The Energy Fund is one of the most important tools we have to support renewable energy!
